TS Ophelia Menyebabkan banjir Pada Dominica, dari bergerak

September 29, 2011 - Roseau, Dominica (AP) - Tropical Storm Ophelia menyebabkan banjir dan memotong komuniti beberapa Rabu ini pulau Caribbean timur, tetapi ribut tinggal di Atlantik terbuka dan bergerak jauh dari Kepulauan di bawah angin.

Kira-kira 1600 orang terkandas dan hampir satu dozen kereta yang dihanyutkan di Dominica, kata Nathaniel Ishak, bencana penyelaras kesediaan pulau. "Ia cukup mengerikan," katanya. Sekolah-sekolah, perniagaan dan pejabat kerajaan ditutup Rabu. Hujan lebat memaksa penutupan Canefield Lapangan Terbang, salah satu daripada 2 lapangan terbang pulau, kata Rayburn Blackmoore, menteri jalan-jalan dan infrastruktur. Komuniti beberapa kehilangan kuasa.

Ophelia mempunyai angin yang mapan yang maksimum kira-kira 60 mph (95 kph) lewat Rabu. Trek ramalan akan mengambil amnya utara yang lalu Bermuda hujung minggu ini. Jauh timur di Atlantik, Tropical Storm Philippe telah mapan angin maksimum 40 mph sejam (64 kph). Ia dijangka menjadi lemah dan boleh menjadi kemurungan tropika oleh lewat khamis.

Di Pasifik, Hilary lemah daripada taufan kepada ribut tropika dengan kelajuan angin 70 mph sejam (110 kph). Hilary tidak dijangka berhampiran pantai Mexico.

Kemalangan kapal terbang kecil di Indonesia; 18 dikhuatiri mati

September 29, 2011 - Medan, Indonesia (AP) - Sebuah pesawat kecil dalam penerbangan tempatan di bahagian barat Indonesia terhempas ke kawasan pergunungan Khamis dan 18 orang di atas kapal dikhuatiri mati, kata pegawai. Rupa bumi yang lasak dan hujan menghalang pencari yang cuba untuk mencapai bangkai.

CASA Sepanyol direka C-212 kira-kira separuh melalui penerbangan selama 30 minit antara Sumatera Utara dan wilayah Aceh ketika itu terputus hubungan dengan kawalan trafik udara, kata jurucakap Kementerian Pengangkutan, Bambang Ervan.

Minit kemudian, pesawat berkuasa turboprop menghantar isyarat kecemasan dan kemudian turun dari radar, Bonar Hutagaol, Tentera Udara mengatur, memberitahu TVOne. TS Ophelia causes flooding on Dominica, moves away

September 29, 2011 - ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) - Tropical Storm Ophelia caused flooding and cut off several communities on this eastern Caribbean island Wednesday, but the storm stayed in the open Atlantic and moved away from the Leeward Islands.

About 1,600 people were stranded and nearly a dozen cars washed away in Dominica, said Nathaniel Isaac, the island's disaster preparedness coordinator. "It's pretty terrible," he said. Schools, businesses and government offices were closed Wednesday.

Heavy rain forced the closure of Canefield Airport, one of the island's two airports, said Rayburn Blackmoore, minister of roads and infrastructure. Several communities lost power.

Ophelia had maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 kph) late Wednesday. Its forecast track would take it generally northward past Bermuda this weekend.

Farther east in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Philippe had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph). It was expected to weaken and could become a tropical depression by late Thursday.

In the Pacific, Hilary weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm with winds of 70 mph (110 kph). Hilary was not expected to near Mexico's coast.

Small Plane Crashes In Indonesia; 18 Feared Dead

September 29, 2011 - MEDAN, Indonesia (AP) - A small plane on a local flight in western Indonesia crashed into a mountainous area Thursday and the 18 people aboard were feared dead, officials said. Rugged terrain and rains hampered searchers trying to reach the wreckage.

The Spanish-designed CASA C-212 was about halfway through its 30-minute flight between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces when it lost contact with air traffic control, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan.

Minutes later, the turboprop-powered plane sent out a distress signal and then dropped off the radar, Bonar Hutagaol, an Air Force marshal, told TVOne. "I saw something unusual," Agus, a witness, told the station. "A smoking plane circling very low before it disappeared from my view."

Wreckage of the aircraft - spotted during an aerial survey near the mountainous village of Bahorok - appeared to be largely intact, its wings still fused to the body, said Ervan. There were no signs of the 14 passengers and four crew members, he said.

Supri Sinaga, head of the local search-and-rescue team, said it could take hours to reach the scene because of torrential rains and rough terrain. Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, from plane and train crashes to ferry sinkings. Many are blamed on overcrowding and poor safety standards.
